A Day in the Life of Jessica Mylne

What does Jessica Mylne, this week’s event pro do on a typical day? As Darling & Co Corporate Sales and Event Manager for Australian Venue Co, Jessica is responsible for building relationships and seeking out clients who might not have thought of the Darling & Co for their next event. Calling Jessica a bit of a foodie is an understatement, so it’s a good thing that the venue where she works delivers on that point!  Keen to know why Jessica occasionally moonlights as a hand model or what the staff eat for lunch? (It’s pretty good!) Read on…

7:00 am | Good Morning World

Good morning, world. I don’t like to waste time in the morning, so I usually jump out of bed, get myself ready for the day and grab something for breakfast as I head out the door to the office.

9:00 am | First Thing First – Coffee

First stop, coffee. One of the perks about working at Darling & Co is the amazing house blend coffee and wide variety of different milk we stock. Coffee in hand, it’s time to check my emails and get ready for the day. I try to flag emails that need my attention and work through these early so that once it is done, I can focus on other tasks.

As our Functions Coordinator, Deanna checks everything is set up and ready for the day’s events, I make sure that I have everything prepared for any meetings I have with clients. We work together to make sure our dedicated function rooms always look pristine for sight inspections so that clients can see how beautiful the space can be for their event.

11:00 am | Morning Meet and Greet

My role is all about building relationships and actively seeking out new clients. Most of my days consist of scheduling meetings with companies and groups that I think will align with Darling & Co well. I like to schedule my meetings mid-morning to be able to follow up and write notes on what we spoke about, so it is still fresh in my mind.

I meet clients in the restaurant for a quick chat about the venue and company. It’s nice and airy in the restaurant and it gives them a chance to see some of our mouth-watering dishes as they come out of the kitchen. Once I’ve got a sense of what requirements they have, we’ll take a quick tour through the dedicated function spaces so I can show then the different capabilities of each room. After each meeting is done, I’ll type up my notes and get any information I’m missing so that next time we meet, I’ll easily be able to refresh my memory.

12:30 pm | It’s Lunch Time, Darling!

The Haloumi Bowl is a fast favourite among the team at Darling & Co and many of us will have it for lunch several times a week. Stacked with grilled halloumi, avocado, brown rice, kale, broccolini, kimchi and button mushrooms – it’s fresh and light but still filling enough to keep everyone working through the day without dipping into the lolly jar.

3:00 pm | Of An Afternoon

Afternoons are often spent researching new clients and offerings. I’ll reach out to people holding events to see if they are interested in hosting the next one at Darling & Co. Sometimes it’s just the local book club looking for somewhere to meet and sometimes it’s huge charity gala balls that haven’t thought of Darling & Co as a venue yet.

There are always new activations happening at Darling & Co and often I’ll step in to be a hand model for a photoshoot of our newest food offering. It’s a great way to break up the afternoon and familiarise myself with new specials so when people have questions, I can answer them fully.

5:00 pm | Knock Off or Keep Going?

My finish time will depend on what’s on in the evening. Events hosted by Darling & Co are always a perfect opportunity to show off the venue and it is rewarding to see the execution of all our hard work and planning.

With Suncorp Stadium across the road, Darling & Co is nice and close to stop in for a drink before the game or concert. I love when familiar faces pop in to say hello before an event and I’ll make a point of leaving the office to have a chat. It’s a great chance to catch up and someone always has a new event idea that they want to ask my opinion on.

6:00 pm | Home Time

Once I’m finished for the day, I usually like to go out and try new offerings from other venues or sit at home and check out the newest foodie news online. I really enjoy seeing the creative things that other venues come up with and you never know where inspiration may come from.
