We’ve got themes for those looking for a fun vibe, and styling trends for those that want to create a more sophisticated soiree. So don’t disappoint your guests with a lacklustre celebration this year, let Event Birdie help you get creative!
1. Scandinavian Christmas
The team at Decorative Events and Exhibitions are tipping this to be THE Christmas party style for 2015 and we are riding that sleigh too! We LOVE Scandinavian styling!
To get the look Decorative Events combines natural wood accessories, fir trees, knitted stockings and reindeer. Add some black and white geometric features and you have yourself a Scandinavian Christmas!
Menu ideas? Add a cheesy fondue station, gravlax and meatballs!
Dress up? No need for fancy dress… but you could have some fun by asking guests to wear their best daggy Christmas jumper.
2. Modern Geo Christmas
Modernise traditional Christmas events with geometric shapes in bold black, crisp white and rich red. The stylists at Decorative Events suggest adding some gold or silver trimmings for a bit of bling and say to think “white, white, white” as the canvas in which to build your look upon. Use geometric patterns on linen and stationary to give the overall look a modern edge.
Menu ideas? Think traditional Christmas fare with modern flavours. Check out this selection from Gourmet Traveller.
Dress up? Hip and happening party attire!
3. Winter Wonderland
Winter Wonderland is a classic Christmas party theme and one that never goes out of style! Noel Nassar from Noel Nassar Events claims this to be one of his favourites! He suggests combining a mix of crystal, silver and white decor to create an icy look. Use chandeliers, soft candlelight, silverware and gorgeous white blossoms to create a magical snow dome atmosphere.
Menu ideas? A seafood station displayed on crushed ice would work perfectly!
Dress up? Party attire or, if you must, come as your favourite Frozen character!

4. Indiana Jones
This is a great theme for the adventurous, suggests Paige Jones from Divine Events. To accomplish this look she suggests rich earthy tones combining textures such as leather, wood and fresh foliage. Add some vintage globes, maps, antlers and artefacts to make guests feel as if they are in the heart of an epic movie adventure.
Menu ideas? You could always get your caterer to go wild with a replica banquet from the Temple of Doom… but if eyeball soup isn’t to your taste, try a delicious carvery or BBQ style menu.
Dress up? Oh the possibilities – there are four movies to choose from!
5. Mexican Fiesta
Another classic, Mexican Fiesta is a great party theme. This is a theme that can turn a bland event space into a fun party pad. Paige from Divine Events says to get the look combine bright furniture and funky bold florals with traditional elements such as piñatas, cactuses, and bunting.
Menu ideas? Mexican food! And margaritas, of course!
Dress up? From sombreros to human-sized cactuses, this is one theme that will get people into fancy dress.
6. Rodeo – Yeehaw!
Your guests will have a barrel of a time with a Rodeo theme! Angela Trieste from Vanilla Bean Events knows from experience that putting a rodeo theme together can be a lot of fun! She suggests that “stacked hay bales, wine barrels, a rustic country bar, recycled timber furniture, colourful bunting, a bucking bull, cactus plants, red gingham fabrics, a traditional wagon wheel and galvanised buckets filled with flowers will turn any venue into a raging rodeo!!”
Get the guests involved in line dancing and they’ll all be hollering by the end of the night!
Menu ideas? Hot dogs, texas chicken wings, corn on the cob and rodeo fries!
Dress up? Cowboys and cowgirls!!
7. Beachside Christmas
Perfectly Australian, a beachside Christmas theme suits our weather, laid back attitude and is perfect for all those venues with outdoor entertaining spaces. Decorative Events and Exhibitions has suggested this theme, and their interpretation of beachside Christmas is a stylish affair. Driftwood and candles, teal and white trimmings, turtle doves and seashells – it’s a charming Christmas by the sea!
Menu ideas? Seafood, tropical fruits and fresh Australian flavours presented clean and simple.
Dress up? Casual or beachside chic- keep it laid back.
8. Glamorous Gold
Glamorous Gold is another stylish option for dinner or cocktail Christmas parties. Hannah Madderom from Harbourside Decorators suggests Glamorous Gold as a fabulous way to make your end of year celebration extra special. Hannah suggests you layer gold on gold! In the mock-up below (middle image) Hannah has used an antique gold sequin table cloth with gold cutlery, gold beaded charger plates, gold rimmed glassware with gold wine goblets. Surrounded by Santa inspired white Chanel chairs with red cushions. All under the canopy of their white Cherry Blossom branches.
Menu ideas? Fine dining with lots of golden champagne.
Dress up? Ask guests to dress cocktail or black tie to create an extra glamourous affair!
9. Pirates of the Caribbean
Johnny Depp’s presence on the Gold Coast has got us excited about pirates and if we’re excited then we bet your guests will be too! A pirate theme can be a lot of fun – it gives people a chance to not only dress up, but also act the part – who doesn’t like talking like a pirate?! To style the event combine palm trees, heavy wooden furniture, treasure chests, skull and bones, coconuts, gold trinkets and parrots.
Menu ideas? Pirates will eat anything with a flagon of beer… But we also think Churrasco (ie grilled meat carved with swords!) circulating the room would be a fabulous idea!
Dress up? arghhhhh pirate…
